Decorative engraved borders to the Title page and 'Editors note' leaf opposite. A fine and clean copy bound for Asprey in highly attractive contemporary binding of full dark brown morocco. Boards with elaborate decorative gilt tooled borders. Raised bands on spine, each with gilt piping. Compartments fully decorated and lettered in gilt. Gilt inner dentelles. Plain blue endpapers. Previous owners neat bookplate on front pastedown. All edges gilt. A fine and attractive binding. Published by, and bound for, Asprey & Co. Ltd of New Bond Street in London. Some light spotting, mostly to the reverse and margins of some plates, otherwise a very good copy. Rebound in recent half red morroco. Spines with raised bands, each with gilt piping. Compartments ruled, decorated and lettered in gilt. Red cloth on boards. Marbled endpapers. Top edges gilt. The binding is not signed but is certainly the work of a master binder. The Shakespeare Head Edition, edited by Michael Sadleir, with a very useful Index of Characters appearing in the Novels. Old worm hole (the Worm long gone) through the top of the pages in volume one of Barchester Towers, just affecting a few letters of the top line of text on the last three leaves. A bright set in the publishers green cloth with gilt lettering to the spines. Top edges gilt, the others untrimmed.
