George Allen & Unwin.London.,1972 SIGNED BY TOLKIEN and with hand written letter.Three volumes in one,printed on India paper.Three fold out maps.This is the second impression of the one volume,India paper edition originally published in 1969.Black cloth with gilt,green and silver decoration to front board.Spine lettered and ruled in gilt.Original black slipcase with some wear and a small area of damage to one board.The boards of the book are in very good condition,the slip case having taken the knocks over the years.Two pages of the book with neat small repairs to the margins,otherwise a very good bright copy.Given as a prize to a student at Tolkien's college the book has a Merton College,Oxford stamp in gilt to the rear board.The book has been signed by Tolkien on the front free endpaper.Included is a hand written letter from Tolkien,and signed by him,on Merton College headed notepaper.The letter is Tolkien's reply to two students who had written asking if he would sign their copies of his work.He agrees to sign and gives a time when they should visit him.The letter is in its original hand written envelope,without stamp as it was sent through the college internal mail system.Luckily the owner of this copy got to keep the letter,and not his friend.I have not come across another signed college prize copy offered for sale.: Price: 6500.00 GBP
