FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Folio. (13.6 x 9.3 inches). Illustrated with 100 leaves of fine engraved plates by Johannes Kip and Michael van der Gucht after G. Freman, &c. The plate count varies in copies listed on the ESTC and some copies are reported with 101 plates. There is no list of illustrations but the text pages have been collated and are complete. Earliest state of the title page with ten London booksellers listed. Two leaves with small area of loss to corners, one with the word Chapter clipped at the top and the other with a small amount of loss to the bottom outer corner and not affecting the text. A handful of pages with some minor foxing but overall a very good bright and crisp copy throughout, and the plates are good strong impressions. Finely bound in late twentieth century period style full brown panelled calf. Spine with raised bands. The compartments ruled in gilt and decorated in blind. Red title label gilt. Plain magnolia coloured endpapers. All edges speckled. Armorial bookplate (presumably salvaged from the earlier binding by the binder) of Mountague Garrard Drake, of Shardelois, Bucks, mounted on the verso of the engraved frontispiece. Drake (1692–1728) was a British Tory politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1713 and 1728. --- An attractive copy of this important work. -- Wing L950.
