John Boydell. London. 1782.
SECOND EDITION. Folio. (16.8 x 11.8 inches). Text pages and 98 (of 102) engravings, the first set of anatomical plates are complete and numbered I to XI, all present but with the inclusion of an extra plate of a nude female taken from another contemporary volume, not called for in the text, plus 43, of 45 plates featuring two engraved heads each. Lacking plates 30 and 45. One plate cropped to the margin, but well away from the printed area, otherwise the plates are generally very good clean examples. Strip of plain paper stuck across the middle of the title page, obscuring some text. Large repair, using two strips of white paper, to two tears on the index leaf, not affecting the text. Bound in late eighteenth/early nineteenth century half burgundy calf binding with marbled paper covered boards but rebacked with recent burgundy calf spine to match. The spine has raised bands with the compartments double ruled in gilt and decorated in blind. Black label, gilt. Original front board has a contemporary leather title label to the centre. An incomplete copy of a beautiful and uncommon book.
