Benj. Motte. London. 1707.
FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. Folio. (16.7 x 11.2 inches). Engraved frontispiece, two engraved title pages, one in English and one in Latin, full page engraving before the text and then 101 full page plates, numbered 1 to C but with 2 plates numbered LIIIA and LIIIB and 211 illustrated initials by Sturt. Complete with the rare subscribers list, which shows just 130 names, including those of Nicholas Hawksmoor, Vanbrugh and Sir Christopher Wren. Armorial bookplate on the verso of the Latin title page, of Mountagu Garrard Drake (1692 - 1728) the Tory Member of parliament for Amersham in Buckinghamshire. A more recent owner has neatly written his name in black ink below this bookplate, also at the top of the English title page and the same person's mono illustrated bookplate, in the style of Aubrey Beardsley, is on the front paste down endpaper. A superior copy, the plate impressions strong and dark throughout and the pages crisp and clean. In an attractive contemporary binding of full panelled calf. Spotted lighter calf panel on both boards. The spine with raised bands, the compartments decorated in gilt. Burgundy title label, gilt. Some wear and splitting on the hinges to the top and bottom of the spine but overall a better than very good copy of this beautiful and uncommon work, the finest of the many editions of Pozzo's work and one of the most beautiful architectural books published.
