Doubleday, Doran and Co., Inc. New York. 1940.
FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. 8vo. (9 x 6.2 inches). Portrait frontis. Neat four line inscription from a previous owner on the front blank free endpaper, otherwise clean and bright throughout. Finely bound in early half burgundy Morocco leather. Spine with five raised bands, each with gilt piping. Compartments ruled, lettered and fully decorated in gilt. Red cloth on boards. Marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. The binding is unsigned but is certainly the work of a master Bookbinder. --- Richards' bibliography of Kipling notes that while this book is the first American printing of several works, including The King and the sea, and styles itself as the 'Definitive edition', it omits some poems that were previously included in the Sussex and Burwash editions of the Works of Kipling. Richards. A451.
