Macmillan and co. London. 1894 + 95.
FIRST EDITIONS. Two volumes. 8vo. (7.3 x 5 inches). Illustrated throughout by J. L. Kipling, W. H. Drake and P. Frenzeny. Previous owners neat, but faded inscriptions on front blank endpaper of both volumes, otherwise fine bright and clean copies throughout. Fine early twentieth century full leather bindings of full dark blue morocco, spines with five raised bands, the compartments ruled, decorated with animal head devices and lettered in gilt. Single gilt ruled borders on all boards. Front boards with elaborate multi coloured leather onlay illustrations; Jungle Book has Hathi the Elephant stood under a tree, The Second Jungle Book features Baloo the bear, stood up on hind legs beside a tree. Board edges with gilt piping. Decorative gilt inner dentelles. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Original gilt decorated blue cloth spines and front & rear covers bound in at the end of each volume. A small amount of rubbing to the extremities and both spnes are uniformly faded but the gilt is still bright and overall this is a lovely set first editions of of these classic books in very attractive scarce early onlay bindings. The bindings are unsigned but are certainly the work of a master bookbinder.
