Gaiety Theatre. London. No date. 1887.

Theatre programme. 8pp. (7.5 x 5.5 inches). Printed in blue on white paper. Contains a cast list, synopsis and adverts printed on two sheets, folded and one loosely inserted to the other, as issued. A couple of light creases. Some loss to the top of the rear panel and a closed tear to the top of the front where is has been roughly opened, otherwise a very good example of this rare playbill. --- The production, a burlesque operetta by Henry Richard and based on Mary Shelley's novel, opened at the Gaiety Theatre in London on 24th December 1887, and was closed a week later. The cast included Nellie Farren as Dr. Frankenstein and Fred Leslie as the monster who is in touch with his feminine side. Possibly well ahead of it's time (Rocky Horror Show anybody?) the Victorian audiences weren't impressed and found the piece too feminist in tone. In addition, the theatre going public was annoyed at George Edwardes, who, in a bid to raise more revenue, had increased the number of stalls, at the expense of the cheaper, and popular 'Pit' area.
