Longmans, Green & Co. London. 1899.
FIRST EDITION. Two volumes. Large 8vo. (9.3 x 6.2 inches). Portrait frontis of Viscount Cromer in volume one, and Lord Kitchener in volume two. Illustrated throughout with 56 mono plates, mostly by Angus McNeill of the Seaforth highlanders, and 34 maps, 20 of these fold out. With the corrected text -- inverted comma present on page 459 of volume 2. This copy was isued without the publishers catalogue. Some pages affected by foxing throughout both volumes. Frustratingly some pages are quite heavily spotted while others are spotlessly clean, but overall the volumes are tight and neat. In the publishers dark blue cloth with gilt lettering and illustrations to front boards and spines. Black coated endpapers, with the inner hinges still very good and intact. The cloth bindings are a little rubbed but overall very good and the gilt to the spines and boards is still very bright and fresh. Overall this is a very good copy of this important work. -- Churchill's second book. Only 2003 copies were published on 6th November 1899.
