Angus and Robertson. Sydney. 1895, 1895.
FIRST EDITION, first printing. 8vo. (7.2 x 5.3 inches). xvi, 184pp. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR; 'With Best wishes, A. B. Paterson', on the half title page. Previous owner name, W. H. Mant, dated 21/10/95 (4 days after publication), on the front blank free endpaper. --- William Hall Mant (1869 - 1911), was a lawyer and close friend of Paterson's, working as a Crown prosecutor in Sydney in the 1890's. Paterson was Godfather to Mant's first born son John Francis Mant (1897 - 1985). This copy has been passed down through generations of the Mant family and now comes to the market for the first time. ---- Original brick red cloth binding with gilt lettering to the spine. There is a closed split, without loss, to the cloth at the bottom third of the front hinge and some rubbing and fading to the boards, but the gilt on the spine is still bright and vibrant. Front inner hinge cracked and the book is a little loose in the binding. Endpapers are browned, very likely as a reaction to the glue used. As with most copies of this book almost all of the text pages have some foxing and marking, to varying degrees. Top edge gilt, the others untrimmed. Overall a near to very good copy of this rare classic of Australian literature, even rarer signed by Paterson and with impeccable provenance.
