POEMS OF HENRY HOWARD, Earl of Surrey. Who Flourish'd in the Reign of Henry the Eighth. Printed from a Correct Copy. With the Poems of Sir Thomas Wiat, and others his Famous Contemporaries. To which are added some Memoirs of his Life and Writings.
HOWARD. HENRY, Earl Of Surrey.; WIAT. Sir THOMAS.
W. Meares, and J. Brown. London.,1717.
8vo. First edition printed outside the sixteenth century, and for most collectors the earliest obtainable edition of the poems of Howard and Wyatt, the "first reformers of our English meetre and stile". First published in 1557, any of the sixteenth-century editions are notably rare. Late eighteenth-century green straight-grained morocco, single gilt rules, flat spine lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Three ownership inscriptions to title in different places, though not disfiguring: one undated, one dated 1892, and the inscription dated 1798 of the literary scholar Octavius Graham Gilchrist (1779–1823), with his bookplate to the front pastedown. Binding a little rubbed but overall an excellent copy.
