Browne, featuring portraits of Edith, Little Paul, Florence and Alice. The second series shows full length portraits of the other leading characters, Dombey, Miss Tox, Mrs. Skewton, Mrs. Pipchin, Old Sol & Cap'n Cuttle, Old Joe, Sir!, Polly, and Miss Nipper. Without Errata leaf. 1st state text points, including"Shewed" and "shew" on p.40, "capatin" on p.324, and "if" missing from p.426, among others. Also illustrated with 40 engraved plates by Browne (including Frontis and extra illustrated title page showing Captain Cuttle's hook incorrectly on his left arm). Very good copy with the usual browning to the edges of plates but still generally a nice copy. Small amount of fraying to the fore edges of two gatherings that had sprung and have at some time been re-inserted. Light offsetting to the reverse of the half title from title page. Finely bound in attractive early half red calf. Spine with raised bands, fully tooled in gilt. Tan label, gilt. Compartments ruled and decorated in gilt. Marbled paper on boards and endpapers. Previous owners bookplate on front paste down endpaper. Edges of binding rubbed and bumped and boards a bit worn but still overall a very good attractive copy.:.
