George Allen. London. 1894.
FIRST THOMSON EDITION. 8vo. (7.3 x 4.9 inches). Beautifully illustrated throughout with 101 fine line engravings by Hugh Thomson. Overall a remarkable copy of this fragile book. A very clean and bright copy of the scarce first Thomson edition, in the publishers highly decorative peacock design binding. Dark green cloth with gilt lettering and decoration to front board and spine. Dark green coated endpapers. Inner hinges firm and without any of the cracking often found in this title. A small amount of rubbing to the corners and some white marking to a small area of the front board otherwise this copy looks like it has barely been read and was obviously very well looked after over the last hundred and twenty something years. All edges gilt. Uncommon in such nice condition.-------- One of the best, and most popular, illustrated books of the late nineteenth century. Thomson illustrated this work for George Allen publishers before going on to illustrate the other Austen books for Macmillan & Co. This is the scarcest of all the Thomson/Austen titles in first edition.
