THE RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM. Rendered into English verse by Edward Fitzgerald
Hodder & Stoughton. London. No Date. Circa 1918, 1918.
EARLY DULAC EDITION. Large 8vo. (7.9 x 5.9 inches). viii,189p. Finely illustrated with 12 fine coloured plates by Edmund Dulac, tipped on to thick buff paper with a triple ruled brown border. Each plate with a printed tissue guard. Two plates have been re-inserted and there is a little damage to the inner margin of the relevant tissue guards. Finely bound in beautiful early full tan calf binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. Raised bands to spine, each with gilt piping. Compartments rulled and decorated in gilt. Brown morocco label, gilt. Gilt ruled line border to boards with decorative blind tooled roll and gilt decoration to the front panel. Board edges with single gilt ruled lines. Turn-ins ruled and decorated in gilt. Purple and gold patterned endpapers. All edges gilt. Attractive illustrated bookplate of previous owner to the front pastedown endpaper. Some very minimal rubbing to the extremities and the spine is darkened but generally this is an excellent and attractive copy. Housed in a custom made felt lined slip case covered using the same purple and gold paper as the endpapers. The case is rubbed and worn but has done it's job of protecting the book. Overall a very good copy in a very attractive leather binding.
