NEW EDITION. 2 volumes. 8vo. (6.8 x 4.6 inches). Illustrated with two wood engraved frontispiece illustrations. The second volume engraving is signed JT. The British Library catalogue entry speculates that this could be John Tenniel. Introduction page in volume one and caption title in vol. 2 with decorative illustrated borders. Very good examples in publishers highly decorative navy blue cloth bindings with elaborate gilt stamped designs to the front boards, with the same design stamped in blind to the rear boards. Spines ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. Yellow coated endpapers with ex libris labels from a seminary on both front pastedowns. A little rubbing to the extremities but overall these are very good copies indeed with the gilt still bright and vibrant. The books are undated but the British Book Trade index shows that the publishers were at the address listed on the title pages between 1853 and 1857. --- OCLC No. 978095224.
