FIRST PRINTING OF THIS EDITION. Two volumes. 4to. (10.4 x 7.8 inches). Finely illustrated throughout with a total of 176 mono illustrations by various artists, including the author. Neat previous owner names on the front blank endpaper of volume one, otherwise fine and clean copies internally. In early half red morocco leather bindings. Spine with raised bands, the compartments ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. Red cloth on boards. Marbled endpapers and page edges. Neat previous owner bookplate on the front pastedown endpapers of both volumes. Repair to split lower hinge on volume one. Rubbing to the edges and the spine of volume 2 toned. Overall an attractive example of this finely illustrated edition. ---- The first printing of this edition which includes the best illustrations previously commissioned for the book.
