SEVEN SECRET ALPHABETS.

Jonathan Cape. London. 1972, 1972.

FIRST EDITION. Large 8vo. (10 x 7.4 inches). 64pp. Illustrated with 182 illustrations, printed in various colours, by Earnshaw, a master of surrealism. Full black cloth binding with gilt lettering to the spine and front board. Fine copy in the red and black printed dustwrapper which is fine. ---- The rare hard cover of this important work. The book was issued in hard and soft cover with this variant being by far the hardest to find. A remarkable book full of Earnshaw's surreal, humorous and dark illustrations. A contemporary review of the book from the Times educational Supplement perhaps sums it up best; "It is fair to say that the author explores a landscape which suggests Magritte and Monty Python. The humour is austere, bleak and if not black, at least charcoal grey. As a feat of imagination the work is outstanding."
